In chemistry, a chemical bond is a force that holds atoms together. There are four main types of chemical bonds: ionic, covalent, metallic, and hydrogen bonds.

Ionic Bonds

Ionic bonds are formed when one atom donates electrons to another atom. The atom that donates electrons becomes a positively charged ion, called a cation. The atom that receives electrons becomes a negatively charged ion, called an anion. The electrostatic attraction between the oppositely charged ions holds them together.

Ionic bonds are found in compounds that contain metals and nonmetals. For example, sodium chloride (NaCl) is an ionic compound that contains sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl). Sodium is a metal that has one valence electron, which it easily donates to chlorine. Chlorine is a nonmetal that has seven valence electrons, and it needs one more electron to complete its octet. The transfer of an electron from sodium to chlorine forms an ionic bond that holds the two atoms together.

Covalent Bonds

Covalent bonds are formed when two atoms share electrons. The shared electrons are attracted to the nuclei of both atoms, which holds the atoms together.

Covalent bonds are found in compounds that contain only nonmetals. For example, water (H2O) is a covalent compound that contains hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). Hydrogen has one valence electron, and oxygen has six valence electrons. Two hydrogen atoms can share their valence electrons with one oxygen atom to form a covalent bond. This bond holds the two hydrogen atoms and the oxygen atom together.

Covalent bonds can be single, double, or triple. A single bond is formed when two atoms share one pair of electrons. A double bond is formed when two atoms share two pairs of electrons. A triple bond is formed when two atoms share three pairs of electrons.

Metallic Bonds

Metallic bonds are formed when metal atoms share their valence electrons with each other. The shared electrons form a sea of electrons that surrounds the metal atoms. The metal atoms are attracted to the sea of electrons, which holds them together.

Metallic bonds are found in metals. For example, iron (Fe) is a metal that has four valence electrons. When iron atoms come together, they share their valence electrons with each other. This forms a sea of electrons that surrounds the iron atoms. The iron atoms are attracted to the sea of electrons, which holds them together.

Hydrogen Bonds

Hydrogen bonds are weak bonds that form between hydrogen atoms and other atoms that are highly electronegative. The hydrogen atom has a partial positive charge, and the other atom has a partial negative charge. The electrostatic attraction between these oppositely charged partial charges holds the two atoms together.

Hydrogen bonds are found in molecules that contain hydrogen and highly electronegative atoms, such as oxygen, nitrogen, or fluorine. For example, water (H2O) molecules contain two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The oxygen atom is highly electronegative, so it has a partial negative charge. The hydrogen atoms have partial positive charges. The electrostatic attraction between these oppositely charged partial charges holds the two hydrogen atoms and the oxygen atom together.
